About this guide. This explainer provides general information about Ontario's Statutory Accident Benefits Schedule (SABS) for educational purposes only. It is not legal advice and does not create a lawyer-client relationship. The benefits and limits shown reflect general standard coverage; your actual entitlement depends on the injuries you sustained, the policy in force on the date of your accident, and how the law applies to your facts — which can change over time. Insurers can and do dispute benefits; a denial is not the final word. For advice about your claim, speak with a licensed Ontario lawyer. The big change: July 1, 2026
Ontario has reshaped auto accident benefits. Here's what you need to know in plain language.
Since July 1, 2026, most accident benefits are optional rather than automatic for accidents on or after that date.Medical, rehabilitation, and attendant care benefits remain mandatory on every policy. Other benefits — including income replacement, non-earner, caregiver, housekeeping/home maintenance, and death & funeral — may depend on the optional coverage purchased on the policy. The benefits available to you generally depend on the policy in force on the date of your accident. If you're unsure what you bought, that's exactly the kind of thing we check for you.
