Uber drivers are urged to contact their personal automobile insurance company to notify them that they will be using their vehicles for the purposes of driving Uber, otherwise, they may be found to have breached their policy. It is difficult to know how an insurer may respond when provided with that information, but they may cancel your insurance, increase your premiums or elect not to renew your policy of insurance.
On July 6, 2017, policy of insurance provided by Intact Insurance for Uber came into effect. Under the Intact Policy, from the moment the Uber app is turned on to the moment passengers exits the vehicle, all passengers, drivers, and vehicle owners in Ontario using Uber are covered by Intact.
However, if an accident occurred while app was turned off, Uber drivers must make an accident benefit claim through their own personal automobile insurance.
