I am an Uber driver, and I was at-fault in an accident, which insurance company do I notify?

On July 6, 2017, policy of insurance provided by Intact Insurance for Uber came into effect.  Under the Intact Policy, from the moment the Uber app is turned on to the moment to the moment the Uber app is turned off, all drivers, and vehicle owners in Ontario using Uber are covered by Intact.

Under the Intact Policy of Insurance, third-party liability coverage is limited to $1,000,000.00 million while the Uber app is turned on, until the driver accepts a passenger’s request for a ride. From the time the driver accepts a passenger’s request until the passenger departs, that coverage is increased to $2,000,000.00.

Determining whether to notify Intact or your personal insurance company depends on whether you had the Uber app or not. If you did have the Uber app on, then you must notify Intact Insurance, however, if your Uber app was not and you were not carrying any passengers then you must notify your personal automobile insurance company.

Out of the abundance of caution, it is recommended that you notify both insurer, Intact and your personal automobile insurance company to assist either insurer to determine which insurer would take priority of responding to your claim.

Uber drivers are urged to contact their personal automobile insurance company to notify them that they will be using their vehicles for the purposes of driving Uber, otherwise, they may be found to have breached their policy. It is difficult to know how an insurer may respond when provided with the information, but they may cancel your insurance, increase your premiums or elect not to renew your policy of insurance.
